I’ve been a silicon valley technology executive for over 20 years. Half of my career has been spent as CEO of two different enterprise software companies where I’ve had the good fortune to work with some of the most innovative and capable people imaginable and also the good fortune to see both companies acquired by large public companies.
Currently I’m currently an Executive in Residence (EIR) at Matrix Partners in Palo Alto where I’m focused on enterprise cloud software which is also the main subject of this blog.
It’s my belief that the most successful companies have a simple strategy that is well executed through a balance of great products and great marketing. Balance does not necessarily mean equal and there are many examples of success where one competency is considerably stronger than the other. But for any given market, there is a necessary “sum” below which one will fail and above which one increases the probability of success.
At heart, I’m a strategist wh
o is excited by brilliant execution. Through this blog, I’ll make observations about both.
I live in Menlo Park with my wife Kathy, twin sons Greg and Jono and Comet (the cat).
